Matthew Krishanu

Matthew KrishanuMatthew Krishanu was born in Bradford in 1980 and lives and works in London. Matthew's paintings and drawings are often of solitary figures, self-consciously posed and contemplative, with a sense of interior life. Narratives are created by placing them within sparse interiors, with objects that act like props - creating a character or setting a scene.

Group exhibitions include Mile End Ancestors, Mile End Art Pavilion (2009), Creekside Open, selected by Jenni Lomax, APT Gallery (2009), The Mausoleum of Lost Objects, Iniva (2008), Let Me Tell You, Whitechapel Gallery (2008), Creekside Open X 2, selected by Victoria Miro, APT Gallery (2007), and A Year in the Life, Whitechapel Gallery (2007).

Matthew's collaborative projects have explored personal narratives and memory in relation to three main themes - remembering a significant person (Mile End Ancestors), object (The Mausoleum of Lost Objects), and event (School Interiors, for Whitechapel Gallery). He is project managing the East End Programme for English Heritage, curating a visual arts exhibition annually in Tower Hamlets and Newham until 2012.

Matthew is currently artist in residence at Croydon College (2009 – 2010), and has previously been artist in residence for Whitechapel Gallery (2006 – 2008). He has delivered formal presentations at the Enquire conference, Sage Gateshead (2007) and as a guest lecturer at Central Saint Martins (2008).

"CIDA helped me get started when I first moved to London - I found the free / low-cost training courses invaluable and I'd recommend them to other artists at an early stage in their careers".
