News » Cred-Ability to Develop First Internationally Accredited Training Programme for Delivering Arts in Prisons – Sector Consultation

A new pan-European project is developing the first internationally accredited training programme for delivering arts projects in prisons. With funding from the European Commission, Cred-Ability will develop modules covering all aspects of delivering arts programmes in prison, common to EU arts practitioners, over the next two years.

Artists, practitioners and organisations already delivering arts in prisons, individuals interested in doing so, and facilitators and prisons organising arts activities, are being invited to contribute to the development of the modules. Online consultation questionnaires seeking to identify training needs will be gathering feedback until Friday 5 April 2013.

  1. Cred-Ability Questionnaire for Artists who would like to work in prison settings
  2. Cred-Ability Questionnaire for Artists working or previously working in prison settings
  3. Cred-Ability Questionnaire for Facilitators: ministries, prison administrators, funding organisations, etc.
  4. Cred-Ability Questionnaire for Organisations leading arts projects inside prisons
  5. Cred-Ability Questionnaire for Prisons/YOI organising arts projects

Over the next two years, there will also be workshops, information exchanges and an international conference in Summer 2014.

European research reveals the invaluable role that the arts can play in the rehabilitation process. Despite this, outside of Britain, there are few accredited training programmes to prepare artists for work inside prisons or to formally accredit staff already using the arts inside prisons.

For the first time, European experts in delivering arts within prisons and experts in education will collaborate together to develop a training programme for artists, adaptable in an extended European context. A framework will be put in place to accredit practitioners already working with the arts inside prisons.

The training aims to empower participants in their creativity, while preparing them for work in challenging settings, using a mixed media approach and up-to-date digital technologies to create versatile online facilities.

This newly updated course will be the first accredited course of its kind, and will result in a qualification recognised at an international level.

The project involves three UK-based and three European partners: the Prison Arts Foundation, Seeds, The College of Teachers, aufBruch in Germany, the Culture College in Latvia and the University of Educational Sciences in Lithuania.
